Introduction
Choose your words carefully.
Consider this: Before you see a client, or a donor, a potential employee, or a potential boss—before any important meeting—you make sure you're looking good. You dress appropriately. You fix your hair. You check that there's nothing stuck in your teeth.
Even if something is stuck in your teeth, though, it's probably not a deal-breaker. When you see someone face to face, you have a lot of chances to make a good impression.
Your words, on the other hand, don't. If your marketing copy, newsletter, direct-mail ad, or annual report has typos, or doesn't make sense—or even if it's just boring—that's that. Your words only get one shot, and someone who stops reading them probably won't start again. All that hard work down the drain.
And remember: A lot more people will see your words every day than will see you.
Services
(Or better yet, choose your writer carefully.)
Whatever you want to say, I can help you say it better. You're already smart; I'll make you sound smarter. You have something interesting to share; I'll help you keep readers hooked. And I'll do it invisibly—because my job is getting people to hear your voice.
I write clean, clear, intelligent copy that delivers its message without wasting space. I can be funny, serious, somber, startling. I do ads, press releases, email blasts, news stories, blog posts, and anything else you can dream up. I can even write rhymes; I've done it lots of times.
If you just want an expert eye to review what you've already written, I can do that too. I've been writing and editing for more than ten years, and I understand the tricks and nuances of communicating in old and new media. And:
- I'm flexible, professional, and easy to work with.
- I'm fast, and never miss a deadline.
- I take a lot of pride in my work, and will do my utmost to ensure that you're not just satisfied, but happy.
Still reading? Then I've done my job. Choose your writer carefully.
Background Information
In 1976, I was born in Fargo, North Dakota, where I lived until enrolling in the journalism program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. I learned a lot about writing and editing in Lincoln, and even more about waiting tables.
In 2001, I moved to California and worked as a copy editor, page designer, and columnist for a daily paper with a circulation of about 17,000. In 2003, I moved to New York City, where I waited some more tables, worked for a jewelry designer in the diamond district, and wrote and edited for national magazines and companies including Spin, Instore, BizBash Media, and Gawker Media.
In March 2009, my wife and I moved to Madison, to be within driving distance of our families, and because we wanted a home that blended the cosmopolitan advantages of New York (great restaurants, plenty of culture, bike paths) with the comforts of the Midwest (not having to take the subway to Target). Besides writing and editing for business clients, I contribute weekly (or so) to Isthmus.
